If you have never been able to insert a tampon, if a routine Pap smear feels like pure agony, or if attempting intercourse feels like hitting a literal "brick wall," you may be suffering from Vaginismus.

This condition carries a heavy emotional toll. You might feel broken, ashamed, or worried about the future of your romantic relationships. But please hear us: Vaginismus is a physical reflex, not a personal failure, and it is highly treatable.

The Mind-Body Loop of Vaginismus

Vaginismus is the involuntary, uncontrollable spasm of the pelvic floor muscles surrounding the opening of the vagina. It happens anytime penetration is attempted—and sometimes just at the thought of it.

It is a protective reflex. Your brain has perceived penetration as a threat or a source of pain, so it slams the doors shut to protect you. Even if you want to have sex, or want to use a tampon, your conscious mind cannot override this subconscious muscle spasm. Pushing through the pain only reinforces to your brain that penetration is dangerous, making the spasm worse the next time.

Breaking the Wall: Our Compassionate Approach

At Milton Physio Plus, we know how vulnerable it is to seek help for this. Our treatment is completely paced by you. We never force, and you are always in the driver's seat.

  1. De-mystifying the Anatomy: We use mirrors and anatomical models to help you understand your body and realize that you are physically capable of accommodating penetration.

  2. External Relaxation: Before we even think about internal work, we focus on releasing the inner thighs, glutes, and abdomen, teaching you how to intentionally drop and relax the pelvic floor.

  3. Progressive Desensitization (Dilator Therapy): We guide you through the use of medical dilators. Starting with one the size of a pinky finger, we retrain your brain and muscles that touch does not equal pain.

  4. Partner Integration: When you are ready, we can teach you how to bring your partner into the healing process in a safe, non-pressured way.

Healing from vaginismus is about rebuilding trust between your brain and your body. You can overcome this, and we are here to guide you every step of the way.
