"Lightning Crotch" and Waddling: Surviving Pelvic Girdle Pain During Pregnancy

Pregnancy brings a lot of magical moments, but it also brings some bizarre and painful ones. If you have ever been walking and suddenly felt a sharp, shooting, electric shock in your pubic bone or deep in your pelvis, you’ve experienced what many moms affectionately call "Lightning Crotch."

If this pain becomes a constant, aching reality that makes it hard to roll over in bed, get out of the car, or put on your pants, you are likely dealing with Pelvic Girdle Pain (PGP) or Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction (SPD).

What is Happening to My Pelvis?

Your pelvis is a ring of bones connected by tough ligaments. To prepare for birth, your body releases a hormone called Relaxin. Just as the name implies, it relaxes the ligaments so your pelvis can expand for the baby.

However, sometimes it works a little too well. If the ligaments become too loose, the pelvic joints (the pubic bone in the front, and the SI joints in the back) become unstable. They begin to shift and rub against each other asynchronously when you move. Your surrounding muscles then go into overdrive, spasming tightly to try and hold the wobbly joints together. The result is intense, sharp, and exhausting pain.

You Don’t Just Have to "Wait Until the Baby Comes"

Many women are told that SPD is just a normal part of pregnancy and that they have to suffer through it. At Milton Physio Plus, we strongly disagree. While we can't change your hormones, we can stabilize the pelvis.

  • Biomechanical Adjustments: We teach you how to move symmetrically. (e.g., Keeping your knees glued together when getting out of the car, sitting down to put on your pants instead of balancing on one leg).

  • Targeted Strengthening: We strengthen the deep core and glute muscles to act as a natural, muscular "corset" that holds the pelvis stable.

  • External Support: We can fit you for a specialized maternity support belt (like an SI belt) that physically compresses the pelvic ring, providing instant mechanical relief.

  • Manual Release: We gently release the overworked, spasming muscles (like the inner thighs/adductors) that are pulling painfully on the pubic bone.

Pregnancy is hard enough. Let us help you stabilize your pelvis so you can walk, sleep, and function with less pain.
